Panther Softball falls to the Fontbonne Griffins

Elsah, ILL. -- Principia Softball faced the Fontbonne Griffins today in a conference double header. A lack of offense worked against the Panthers today, and they were not able to produce the runs they needed to keep the games close.

Game 1: Principia 0, Fontbonne 8

The Panthers got off to a good start defensively, shutting down the Griffins early. With Leah Schaefer on the rubber pitching to contact, the Panther defense was able to make plays and keep the Griffins to one or two runs an inning. Some fielding errors put the Panthers into a hole, but the Griffins were also finding the gaps and hitting bleeders where our defenders weren't.

With only two hits to the Griffin's ten, the Panthers were not able to produce any runs. There were several well-hit balls today that seemed to go right at the Griffin defenders. The Panthers never quite adjusted to Fontbonne's pitcher. Hannah Hathaway and Genie Nyiramana each hit a single in game one.

Game 2: Principia 4, Fontbonne 23

The energy and focus that was present at the start of game one seemed to leave the field at the start of game two. The Panthers struggled to stay energized, and several mental errors ended up costing the Panthers runs. The first half of the game stayed close, but the Griffins had a couple of big innings where it seemed that everything they hit was finding the gaps in Principia's defense.

While Principia offense improved from game one, the Panthers were unable to produce the runs they needed to keep the game within reach. One good inning produced four runs on four hits for the Panthers. Alyssa Hudenburg and Hannah Hathaway each hit a single, and Lauren Daugherty and Leah Schaefer each hit a double and got an RBI.
