Game Recap: Softball |

Principia Softball falls to Webster University

St. Louis, MO. -- The Panthers traveled to Webster on Monday to play a conference double-header. The team came out strong, but ultimately lost two to the Gorloks.

Game 1: Principia 1, Webster 4

Principia's defense started out strong, shutting down the Gorloks in the first two innings. Leah Schaefer was on the rubber, hitting her spots and making it nearly impossible for the Gorloks to get any solid hits. The Panthers were able to hold the Gorloks to a 0-0 ball game until the third inning. Three defensive errors gave the Gorlok's their first two runs and put the Panthers behind. Despite the one lack-luster inning, the Panthers battled right beside the Gorloks and kept the game close.

Offensively, the Panthers had a hard time adjusting to the pitcher. They made solid contact, but nothing got past the infield. With four hits for the game, Emily Hewitt hit a single and Lauren Daugherty hit two singles. The Panther's only run came from a solo home run by Hannah Hathaway.

Game 2: Principia 1, Webster 9

Principia came out strong on defense in game two, shutting down the Gorloks in the first inning. Leah Schaefer was back on the rubber, getting the ground balls and pop flies the defense likes to see, but mental and physical errors cost the Panthers runs that their offense couldn't get back. While the Panthers had several 1-2-3 out innings, the Gorloks had a couple of innings where their hits found the gaps.

On offense, the Panthers hit some balls hard that just didn't find the gaps. They had runners in scoring position in several innings, but could not seem to get the hits to bring those runs in. Emily Hewitt, Alyssa Hudenburg, Hannah Hathaway, and Tanya Marquardt each had hits in game two. Hannah Hathaway drove in the team's only run.

Both games were well fought, and a step in the right direction for the Panthers. With the elimination of errors and being able to produce hits when there are runners in scoring position, the Panthers will be a force to be reckoned with.
