RIVER FOREST, IL - Today, the Principia Men's Basketball team was on the road in Chicago against Dominican University. The game started out with a back and forth offensive battle in the first half. The Panthers were down 5 at the break, but came out with renewed defensive energy to hold Dominican to 25 points in the second half. Two free throws with two seconds left from
Shemarri Miles sent the game to overtime. Principia dominated overtime 19-8, coming away with a 94-83 victory.
The game started with low energy on the defensive end, as the Panthers struggled to get stops. However, they were able to convert on the offensive end and keep things close thanks to a few buckets from
Shemarri Miles and
Clark Davidson.
Nathan Brantingham was the big bright spot for the Panthers in the first half, as he led the way and had 12 points and 9 rebounds at the half.
At the break, the Panthers were down by 50-45. The team knew they would have to pick their defense up if they were going to win the game. For the first 8 minutes of the second half, Principia fought hard to make their come back. They were able to string together a hand full of stops and a few more buckets inside for Brantingham. With 12 minutes to go, guard
Jake Kampf hit a 3 to bring the Panthers up by 1. The Stars knocked down a few shots and fought back to put them up 3 points with 2 minutes left in the game.
AJ Byrd hit a pull back jumper for a bucket and a foul and was able to convert on the free throw, which tied the game up at 73. After a couple of free throws from Dominican, the Panthers were down by 2 points with 17 seconds to play.
Shemarri Miles was able to get loose and draw a foul on a 3 point shot, and after converting 2 of 3 free throws brought the game to overtime.
In overtime,
Kevin Wingert converted a couple of 3 pointers and freshman
Charley Hoffman knocked down a mid range jump shot to give the Panthers a 4 point lead. Down the stretch, a couple of stops and good offensive possessions for Principia, along with some free throws from
Jake Kampf gave them a strong lead and made it possible for the Panthers to pull out the win, 94-83.
Good to know: Nathan Brantingham finished the game with career highs in points and rebounds, as he had 22 points and 13 rebounds while shooting 11/13 from the field.
Jake Kampf made two clutch three's down the stretch to finish with 16 points.
AJ Byrd and
Shemarri Miles both finished the game with 15 points. The Panthers are on a 2 game winning streak and move to 2-2 on the season.
