Elsah, IL – The Panthers kicked off their season with 9-0 sweeps of the Webster Gorlocks and Illinois Wesleyan Titans.
A look at the matches:
The Panthers took care of the Gorlocks in routine fashion without dropping a set.
Elliott Matthiesen gave the team a nice win at #6 singles, winning 11 of 12 games to close it out. Illinois Wesleyan provided a tougher test, but the boys in blue came ready to take them on.
Drew Funke and
Juan Segovia pulled out a thriller at #2 doubles in a tiebreak, giving the Panthers a 3-0 to start singles. The top three of
Daniel Gomez,
Wyatt Dale, and Segovia then cruised to comfortable wins and a 6-0 Panther lead.
Rafter Sprague battled for a comeback win at #5 singles.
William Johnson bounced back in an Illinois Wesleyan rematch from last season, this time only dropping five games on his way to an excellent singles win.
Good to know:
The Panthers took out the Titans 6-3 in 2020, yet today they upped that score to 9-0 against an improved opponent.
Wyatt Dale played his best tennis of the season, and the Panthers came to play when it mattered most, winning three match-deciding tiebreaks.
Drew Funke was involved in two tight matches in just his second collegiate contest, and consistently came through in big moments.
