Elsah, IL – Principia hosted DII Lindenwood University, falling to 2-2 on the season after taking a 7-2 loss.
A look at the matches:
Juan Segovia and
Drew Funke had a tough day at #2, and a loss at #3 (
Rafter Sprague/
William Johnson) put the Panthers in a quick 2-0 hole.
Daniel Gomez and
Wyatt Dale put a big point on the board with a dominant 8-3 win at the top spot. Gomez (#1) got the lone singles win in an incredible 7-6 (5), 7-6 (10) battle. After fighting off four set points and letting two match points get away, Gomez finally closed it out with a backhand laser to force a forehand error into the net. Dale (#2) went up a break 4-3 in the first set, but couldn't maintain the pressure with his heavy ground strokes the rest of the way. Segovia won his first set at #3 before dropping the next two, coming up short in another full third set. Funke was competitive at #4 in a loss and ripped a few forehand winners, but couldn't keep the errors under control.
Good to know:
Gomez recently spoke with pro player Fernando Verdasco, and credits his improved backhand on display in today's match to that conversation.
