Elsah, ILL. -- After an unexpected rain delay, the Panthers faced the Spalding Golden Eagles for a conference double header. Despite a great first few innings, the Panthers fell flat and couldn't catch up to secure a win.
Game 1:Â Principia 3, Spalding 14
Despite a two hour rain delay, the Panthers came to the field focused and ready to play. They played tough defense in the first few innings, holding the Golden Eagles to just three runs. The Panthers found themselves down one or two runs twice early in the game, and battled hard offensively to bring runs in to tie the game.
Alyssa Hudenburg,
Hannah Hathaway,
Genie Nyiramana, and
Tanya Marquardt each hit a single while Hathaway also hit a double.
Lauren Daugherty hit her first home run of the season to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning.
One bad inning in the top of the fifth got the Panthers into a hole that they couldn't seem to get themselves out of. Mental and physical errors cost the Panthers runs when they couldn't afford them.
Game 2:Â Principia 0, Spalding 11
The focus and energy that showed up at the beginning of game one did not seem to follow the Panthers on to the field for game two. While the Panthers cleaned up their physical errors on defense, a series of unfortunate hits from the Golden Eagles put Principia behind early. With only two hits for the game- belonging to
Emily Hewitt and
Lauren Daugherty- the Panthers were unable to bring any runs in.
